Artist Statement
I believe on the precipice of imagination, lies our ability to live without stereo-types and their binding conformation; where originality is standardized and a history defined by its makers, contriturating the aristocracy and elistists attempting to delineate who “We the People” are. My work consistently serves as a voice for the community of the underserved , whether that be in subject matter, installation location, or in sponsorship and always in representation. My work is a connection to myself and my own missing identity within history’s pages, where I, a Black woman, boldly redefine the ideas that surround those simple words, through a wide range of mediums and materials to effectively reach the masses.

My workflow usually consists of a daily regimen focused in my work as a tattooer and Owner of One Drop Ink Tattoo Parlour and Gallery. There I work to create pieces for people, taking their experiences and ideas, fusing them with my creative and artistic ability, to bring them to life on a constantly changing medium, living skin. I have traveled the world exploring and studying this ancient practice of inflicting permanent alteration in the name of art.

I keep a weekly routine, working in more classical art methods, growing my acrylic and canvas portfolio, with recent explorations on the depth and contrast of dark skin as seen through a classical approach of painting realistic portraits. I am also developing a body of work using controlled pours combined with classical illustrative portraiture.

A consistent larger project, often community based, rounds out my greater blocks of time. Most recently being the Murals of North Nashville Now at the Frist Art Museum, Nashville, TN. Prior projects include, the Centre615 mural wall in East Nashville, for the We Are Seeds Project, and others like Norfwall fest, and Music is Art festival, in Buffalo NY. These are among numerous other public art projects from my North Nashville Notable community coloring book, sponsored through a Metro Arts THRIVE Grant, to the host of events held by the Jefferson Street Art Crawl where I am a founding member and preside as Director.

I seek to bring voice and representation to the marginalized, define and connect our culture with the present, and highlight history that may otherwise be hidden. Art provides that manifestation which you see throughout my body of work; the translation of my experience through explorative use of color, imagery, and application. Each project and piece has its uniqueness as a canvas, where I explore classical ideas with a modern quill, connecting history from an artistic perspective to a community otherwise not seen.
